Q: What is counseling?  A: Counseling is a helping process that takes place in an atmosphere of acceptance, respect, and trust.  School counselors work with students to help them understand themselves, their behaviors, feelings, and relationships.  The purpose of counseling is to help students identify their personal strengths and develop ways to be successful in today’s changing world.

Q:What are the limits to confidentiality?

A: All information shared with the school counselor is confidential unless it involves:
  • A plan to harm self or others
  • Abuse or neglect
  • The courts to subpoena records
In these situations, school counselors are required by law to report this information to parents and/or the appropriate agengies.
